MediaTek has released a new 5G-ready SoC called the Dimensity 720. It consists of two Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.0GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores and an ARM Mali-G57 GPU. The chip supports two carrier aggregation and sub-6GHz 5G networks. We can expect to see it debut alongside some mid-rangers later this year.
The MediaTek Dimensity 720 is an octa-core CPU that comes with two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores. It comes with an ARM Mali-G57 GPU. That, coupled with its support for 90Hz displays, makes it an ideal contender for mid-range gaming smartphones. There’s support for HDR 10+ videos too, but we seldom get to see that feature in this price point. The chip can support one 64MP camera module by itself. Dual-camera setups are limited to 20MP+12MP.
As mentioned earlier, the MediaTek Dimensity 720 is a 5G-ready SoC. It supports 2CC CA (two carrier aggregation) along with standalone and non-standalone sub-6GHz networks. Support for mmWave technology is absent, but it is understandable as the chip is intended for reasonably-priced devices. Memory and storage support is restricted to LPDDR4 and UFS 2.2, respectively. It also supports MediaTek’s 5G UltraSave technology that saves battery by intelligently adjusting the modem’s usage.
It is unclear as to when we’ll get to see the MediaTek Dimensity 720 in action. The chip is very likely in mass production and could very well be powering an upcoming smartphone at this moment. We can expect to see some Dimensity 720-powered smartphones show up later in the year.
