Qualcomm has a new 5G mid-range chipset and it is not a member of the Snapdragon 700 series. The new Snapdragon 690 is the first Snapdragon 600 series chipset with a 5G modem.
The Snapdragon 690 is an 8nm chipset and is touted as the successor to the Snapdragon 675 that powered phones such as the Redmi Note 7 Pro and the Motorola One Hyper. Qualcomm says it brings a 20% increase in CPU performance and a 60% increase in GPU performance compared to the Snapdragon 675.
There is a Snapdragon X51 modem inside it that brings support for sub-6GHz networks. There is also support for Wi-Fi 6 thanks to Qualcomm’s FastConnect 6200.
There is a new AI engine called ARCSOFT that includes a Hexagon Tensor Accelerator that makes real-time Snapchat filters less jittery. You also get smoother transitions when switching between ultrawide and telephoto cameras.
The Snapdragon 690 has support for FHD+ displays with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for 4K video recording at 30fps and stills up to 192MP. Qualcomm says there is also a new enhancement for video encoding. The mobile platform also supports Quick Charge 4+.
